How it works

  1. 1Choose a barcode type, such as UPC-A for retail or Code 128 for labels.
  2. 2Type the number or text. The preview updates as you type and flags invalid data.
  3. 3Download a PNG for documents and label software, or an SVG for print and design.

Choosing a barcode type

Retail barcodes encode a product number. UPC-A (12 digits) is the standard in the US and Canada, EAN-13 (13 digits) everywhere else, and UPC-E and EAN-8 are shorter versions for small packages. Books use an ISBN, which is drawn as an EAN-13 starting with 978 or 979.

For your own labels, Code 128 is the default: it encodes letters, numbers and symbols and is compact. Code 39 is older and wider but still required by some industries. GS1-128 adds application identifiers such as GTIN, batch and expiry date for supply chain labels, and ITF-14 marks shipping cartons.

2D codes hold far more data. A QR code is best for links and anything scanned with a phone, Data Matrix fits on very small parts, and PDF417 is used on ID cards and boarding passes.
